Club teams go marching on

There were two terrific performances by our Hambro and Tolly teams to record convincing wins as they marched into the quarter-finals of the county inter-club knock-outs.

At Woodbridge the Hambro team stormed to a 10-hole advantage at lunchtime against a strong Rookery Park team, and they forged further ahead in the afternoon to secure an overall win by 17 holes. The big winners on the day were Alan Scovell and Jasper Johnson, who finished nine holes up on their opponents. In the quarter-finals the team has been given another very welcome home draw against Waldringfield on Sunday, July 21.

The Tolly team had to travel to play on the tricky nine-hole course at Flempton and after leading narrowly at lunch they moved ahead to win by 10 holes overall. Three of the matches were very close, and ended all square on the day, but Ben Sawkins and Gary Summers proved to be the matchwinners as they beat their opponents by 10 holes. In the last eight the team has to travel again, this time to take on Ipswich at Purdis Heath, also on July 21.

The course may have needed it, but the heavy downfall accompanied by thunder and lightning was not what was required on the afternoon of our Invitation Day. The spectacular deluge, with accompanying fireworks, brought play to a sudden halt and the prizes had to be decided on just nine holes in the afternoon. Brian Lindores and partner Ray Foreman had two birdies in an impressive front nine worth 25 points, to win that prize with Roger Lawrence and Geoff Hall second on 23. The prize for the back nine went to James Young and Tariq Khalifa with 21 points, one better than Dominic Rosser and Simon Townsend. Phil Ashenden was nearest the pin and James Young won the longest drive. The morning greensomes competition was won by Malcolm Crissell and Jonathan Werry Easterbrook with 23pts.
