Woodbridge Golf Club

Great start by club teams

Woodbridge overcame a tough draw away to Bury St Edmunds to win their first-round match by a comfortable 11-hole margin. The big winners on the day were club captain Andy Whittaker and partner Dominic Rosser - who defends his Eastern Counties Cup title next Sunday. They were eight up on their opponents in the first round, and added a four-hole win in the afternoon.

Alan Scovell and Dick Barton also won both their matches, by three holes in the morning and two more in the afternoon. The other pairs had a win and a loss, with Steve Mann and Toby Ayles three down followed by one up, and Adrian Studd and Jasper Johnson one up followed by five down.

Meanwhile, at Woodbridge the Tolly team were on their way to an eventual 26-hole win over Stowmarket. Tim Killingback and Richard Pearce won by three in the morning and romped to a nine-hole win in the afternoon. Cliff Longman and Mark Horsfield also won both rounds, by two and then by four.

Gary Summers and Ben Sawkins were five-hole winners in the morning but lost by one in the afternoon, while Peter Hewitt and David King recovered from a four-hole loss in the morning to win by eight in the afternoon.

In the second round draw the Hambro team were paired with Rookery Park, at home, while the Tolly team must go to Flempton. Both matches will be played on Sunday, June 23.
